Perennial Peanut is a Food Forester's dream plant. This is a great groundcover for many reasons.

1. It is fast growing and thrives on neglect

2. It can tolerate mowing - meaning it is a great green mulch but does not require mowing (6-18" height)

3. It fixes nitrogen into the soil (like most legumes)

4. The flowers are edible

Keep in mind, this plant has an agressive growth habit. This means it can spread outside of its desired area. It can spread by other underground roots and by above ground runners. Its lush green color with small yellow flowers make it an actractive option for turf lawn replacement, roadside plantings, and is even being used to generate hay for agriculture.

This plant grows as a perennial in any frost free USDA zone and can be recommended for 8b-11. Growth will slow down in colder months and you may notice behaviors similar to dormancy. Frost and freezes will likely not kill the plant, but will cause leaf drop.

There is no perfect soil condition for perennial peanut, but it will not tolerate consistently saturated soils like those in wetlands. It has a wide soil ph range of 5.8-7.0

It doesn't have a perfect like condition either. Perennial Peanut will grow in Full Sun, Part Sun, Part Shade, and even Mostly Shade. Sun conditions will affect how quickly perennial peanut will grow into an area and establish itsel. The more light, the quicker it spreads.

Perennial Peanut is drought tolerant. It will survive and thrive in the abscence of irrigation. During drought, you will see growth slow down and drying of leaves. But this plant rarely dies between periods of normal rain in most climates.

Spacing all depends on how thick you want your perennial peanut to be. If you want an immediate thick look, plants the starts or 1 gal plants within 1 foot of each other. Otherwise, you can space them out as far apart as you'd like.
