Ascelpias tuberosa is a Florida native milkweed that grows well in sandy soils making it a great solution for gardens with dry sandy soil. No soil ammendments needed! Literally. This milkweed thrives in sandy soil and will actually do worse when planted in super rich organic soil that retains moisture. The blooms are typically a solid orange color. This plant will go dormant in the winter and come back in late spring. We recommend gardeners with butterfly gardens to plant this instead of Asclepias curassavica which is a non-native milkweed commonly sold at nurseries found to have negative effects in monarch health.
Butterflyweed tends to only grow to a height of about 2 feet tall and only about 1 foot wide. We like to grow this plant in clusters of drylands intermixed with clumping grasses that provide protection for the butterflies and caterpillars.
This native milkweed is classified as a short-live perennial. This means that you may only get 2-3 years out of a single plant. It does self-seed but propagation through seeding may be minimal.
It is one of the only milkweed species that does not have a milky sap substance when a leaf is broken or torn. The natural range of this plant in Florida includes almost the entire state. It can be easily grown in zones 10, 9, and 8.
Keep in mind we are selling a Florida ecotype. This plant may not act the same outside of Florida.
