Swamp Milkweed is an easy to grow Florida native milkweed with pink flowers. This is our favorite native milkweed to grow for a few reasons:
1. It can grow in a wide variety of conditions
2. It can reach up to 5 feet tall, thus creating a lot of food for caterpillars and adds textured height in a native garden
3. The pink flowers look great in a native garden
The leaves, seed pods, and new stems serve as a food source and host plant for the monarch, queen, and soldier butterfly larvae. The flowers provide nectar for adult butterflies and can be enjoyed by other pollinators. Here in Central Florida, we see bloom in the middle of summer.
This is a Florida ecotype of Asclepias incarnata. While Asc. incarnata is native to more than Florida, this ecoytpe performs best in Florida and may not survive dormancy in climates colder than Florida.
Swamp Milkweed can be found growing naturally in low areas near wetlands, swamps, ditches, and etc. Even though it thrives in these conditions, it can also be grown in typical Florida urban landscapes if supplemented with some irrigation between periods of rain.
It is not picky on soil type and can thrive in sandy loam that is acidic.
Our Swamp Milkweed grows in all light conditions but blooms best in full sun.
Pests such as oleander aphids and milkweed bugs, may commony be found on most milkweeds. They do not typically cause enough destruction to the plant that removal is necessary. You may also find Milkweed Assassin bugs nearby. Although considered a beneficial predator, they will feast on any caterpillars.
