Florida native milkweed with beautiful white blooms serving an important nectar source for butterflies. Like other milkweeds, this native is a host plant to monarch, queen, and soldier butterflies. This variety of milkweeds is smaller than others in both height and leaf size. Loves full sun or part shade. Prefers consistently moist soils along drainage ditches, canals, ponds, or swamps. Can be grown in containers that retain soil moisture.

If the soil conditions sound difficult to achieve in your landscape, we suggest keeping this milkweed in a pot where you can control the soil moisture. Although the description states it prefers moist soil, we have found that it is somewhat tolerant to brief periods of dry soil. Don't let the constant moisture deter you from adding this plant to your landscape.

An interesting fact about Asclepias perennis is that it is one of the only native milkweeds that will not go dormant based on cold temperatures alone. Scientists suggest that this milkweed relies on flooding to send it into dormancy rather than cold temperatures. This cycle of dormancy also allows Asclepias perennis to be one of the first available milkweeds for migrating monarchs as it could potentially be available well before other native milkweeds. It is an important milkweed for early caterpillars.

Categorized as a short-lived perennial, it can self seed and divide itself through rhizomes. The natural range in Florida is no further south than Central Florida. The natural range ends in Sarasota and Osceola counties. However, it is suitable to grow in zones 10, 9, and 8.
