Bahama Cassia is a FL native senna that draws plenty of attention with yellow flowers. As a short-lived perennial it should give you 2-5 years of year-round growth while going semi-dormant in the coldest days of winter. In south FL, it will bloom year-round. It grows like a small shrub. We enjoy using it as a hedge, for a border, to hide fencing or other unsightly parts of a landscape, and as a speciment plant where yellow flowers will pop.
We strongly encourage FL landscapers and gardeners to plant this native species over non-native sennas. Popular non-native sennas include Christmas senna (S. pendula), or Butterfly senna, which is often recommended for butterfly gardens. However, it is listed as a Cat 1 Invasive Species in FL.
Another non-native Senna is Candlestick senna, Senna atala. These seem to be growing in popularity, but also because they seed themselves really well. It is currently listed as a "warning" plant for the invasive species list.
There is another native senna. It is called Privet Senna, Senna ligustrina. This has a wider natural range in FL than Bahama Cassia and is recommended more so for gardens outside of South FL.
Hosts the cloudless sulphur, sleepy orange, and orange-barred sulphur butterflies.
Native to South FL.
Natural range in FL includes Miamia-Dade County and the Keys.
Enjoys full sun or part shade.
It is used to south FL sandy soils and will tolerate a mix of sometimes moist to short dry periods.
Height of 2-4' tall and 3-6' wide.
Can be grown in zones 10-11, although we have success growing in 9b as well.
