Coralbean, also known as Cherokee Bean, is a FL native shrub with thorns and awesome flowers. The trumpet shaped red flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The bloom period is usually early spring and is somewhat short lived. It is naturally found in the understory of forests, usually on the woodline. We love to use it in the understory of our food forest to attract pollinators.
Native Americans have many medicinal documented uses. It is also documented as toxic so please use extreme caution with any medicinal use of this plant.
Flowers terminate into bean pods that can seed the following year's crop. The flowers also are a great addition of color when other wildflowers haven't bloomed yet.
Native to FL, and some of the southeast United States.
Natural range in FL includes the entire state.
Can be grown in full sun, part shade, or most shade.
Likes soils that are well draining with occasional droughts.
Can be grown in zones 8-11
