Dune Sunflower, sometimes called Beach Sunflower, is a Florida native perennial that can be grown practically anywhere. With a sprawling growth habit around 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall, this is a great plant for anywhere in the landscape. We have used it as a border, for erosion control on river banks, as a ground cover, or as a cascading plant out of decorative pots. This plant loves full sun but will grow in part shade with a slight reduction in blooms. Dune Sunflower prefers dry sandy soil.
There are three subspecies of Helianthus debilis. They are commonly referred to as East Coast Dune Sunflower, West Coast Dune Sunflower, and Cucumberleaf Dune Sunflower. We carry the East Coast variety and encourage customers to only plant the variety that best fits their geographical location to prevent cross hybridization between the subspecies.
