Cranberry Hibiscus is an unique addition to any garden. It is ideal for food forests and foodscapes. Without intervention, this bush likes to get tall and leggy - Sometimes taller than 6 feet. Pruning can encourage a bushier, fuller appearance.
The leaves are edible raw or used in stir-fry. Seeds can easily be harvested to propagate more. The hibiscus shaped flowers are stunning in the landscape and attract a wide variety of bees.
Edible Uses:
Leaves have a tart flavor that is similar to cranberries. Leaves can be eaten raw or cooked in stirfry. Leaves can be used to add a tart flavor to tea.
Flowers are used to add color to tea.
Native to Eastern Africa
Can be grown in full sun, partial shade, or most shade. We grow this plant almost anywhere.
Prefers well drained moist soils but will grow almost anywhere.
Can reach heights of 8 feet but will usually be knocked over by wind. Prune to shape.
Can grow in zones 9-11 as a perennial. Will act as an annual outside that range.
