Turk's Cap Hibiscus is a easy to grow shrub for Florida gardens. Although not a true hibiscus, it definitely grows similar to hibiscus. It can be leggy if not pruned. Pruning allows you to grow it to shape or let it become tall. Great for understories of a food forest, a hedge, or as a specimen plant.
Red flowers are edible and bring a nutritious addition to salads. When removed from the calyx, the back of the flower, or ovule, is filled with a sweet flavor. We typically pull the flower from the calyx and eat only the back end of the flower. The flavor reminds me of honeysuckle but Turk's Cap offers a crunch when enjoying this particular section of the flower.
