Corkystem Passionvine is a FL native passionvine that likes to climb trees, a trellis, or run along a fence. It has the normal passionvine flower except it is much, much smaller. It also lacks the vibrant colors of passionvine flowers like Maypop or Purple Possum. The fruit is also small and generally not eaten by humans. The flavor is not desirable and the seeds take up most of the area where the flesh would be. Instead, birds and other animals will eat it. Our chickens love it!!
We grow Corkystem because it is a great host to the Zebra Longwing, Gulf Fritillary, and Julia Butterflies. It seems these butterflies prefer this passionvine over others. Try growing your passionvine using a native Firebush or Buttonsage Lantana as a trellis for an "ultimate butterfly attraction".
Corkystem can have a variance in leaves. Scientist believe that it changes the shape of leaves to try and confuse the butterflies trying to host on it. You may see a variance in leaves after it has been knocked back by caterpillars feeding on it.
Native to Florida, Texas, and Central and South America
Naturally found in Florida's coastal counties up until Taylor and Nassau Counties. It has been described as being inland in South FL and Central FL.
Tolerates full sun or part shade. Some suggest that sunlight determines if the Zebra Longwing or Gulf Fritillary will host the plant more than the other. In shade, it has been observed that the Zebra Longwing will host more than in full sun. In full sun, the Gulf Fritillary will host the plant more.
Prefers sandy soils or those that are well-draining.
Somewhat drought tolerant.
Can be grown in zones 9-11
