Pokeweed or Pokeberry, is a native plant to most of the U.S. It is commonly viewed as a weed. The name "poke" comes from a Native American word "pakon" which can be loosely translated to the word "dye". The berries of this plant were commonly used for dyes and even ink for writing.

The plant's components have a bad reputation for being toxic. However, when prepared correctly they are edible. In fact, poke greens were canned and sold commercially in the U.S. until the year 2000. Poke greens harvested by early settlers and in rural areas were known to be some of the earliest wild edible greens of the season. The roots and seeds are thought to be the most toxic parts of the plant. The berries WITH SEEDS REMOVED are thought to be the least toxic. The earliest leaves of the plant were harvested as edible greens. Once the plant has reached a height of more than 7 inches, the plant should be avoided for edible greens.
