Fragaria virginiana, or Wild Strawberry is a rare wildflower native to FL and most of the eastern United States all the way up to Canada. While not only being edible, it is also a host plant to the Gray Hairstreak Butterfly. Unlike cultivated strawberries, these wild strawberries have tiny fruits that may not be as sweet as their cultivated hybrids. The leaves can be used in teas.
Wild Strawberry is great for the native enthusiast who also seeks to grow an edible landscape. it makes a great groundcover. We have grown it in full shade and full sun. In full shade it appreciates the relief from summer sun, but is much slower growing than in full sun. It also doesn't fruit as well. It is a true perennial and appreciates well drained soils.
